The USB device connected to the same side which you are using an external mouse, instead of the touch-pad, the USB device may get in your way. As low as 10 bucks here on Newegg.Īll ports are on the sides of the device, none in the rear. Same with eSATA (though you'd lose the transfer speed of eSATA).
Those who want FireWire probably already have a Mac but USB -> FireWire converters for PCMCIA slots are easy enough to come by (get one here on Newegg). HDMI is preferable in some cases to the VGA port it does have but VGA is still more common and it *IS* a *mobile* device.
Solidly built, fast enough dual core 64 bit CPU, plenty of RAM, plenty of HD, good display, inexpensiveĬons: No HDMI, No FireWire, No eSATA, No Bluetooth - None of these are deal breakers. Pros: Works well with Linux (PCLinuxOS) - All components I've tested are compatible, including the built-in webcam. It wasn't listed on the specifications so I bought a headset just in case. This laptop has a built-in microphone for those of you wondering. I'd say it's perfect for a student who just wants to get their work done, just don't expect it to last you 2 lectures back to back. If they had fixed everything but the video card i would give this a 5. The Cons that I listed are very minor and at least the trackpad can be fixed with a mouse. I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't expect to game, it does just about everything else perfectly. I bought this for $450 and at that price this laptop is really a steal. I was considering a netbook, but for a hundred more I got a big screen and the power of a pc. Overall Review: My last laptop died suddenly so I needed a cheap replacement.
Short power cable - It's about a foot too short for comfort. It really changed the way that I navigate text. I'm used to having another column to the right of the enter key which has all those and delete at the very top. What I really hate is the placement of the page up/down keys and the fact that Home and End are FN keys. Keyboard - I can't complain about the placement of the FN key because my last two laptops have had it there. Touchpad - It sucks, the movement is not smooth and it misses my strokes at times. I'm surprised at the volume it can reach.Ĭons: Video Card - No recent games will run on this.īattery - It says 4 hours, but under normal usage it won't get much more than 2. Sturdy Keyboard - It feels great to the touch.Ĭamera and Mic - No need to get a headset. Watching movies is delightful on this.īuild Quality - Hasn't scratched yet which is great. Pros: Screen - Very bright and has good horizontal viewing angles. Other than that this notebook is rugged, quiet, cooling running and can handle 90% of my daily needs for a computer.
I plan to upgrade the wireless card to a intel 5100 so I can N support and maybe when the prices of SSD tumble a little further I will invest in a SSD drive for this to increase battery life. Overall Review: Granted with the cons I listed, one needs to realize this notebook is what it is.a value line book and it is a great offering in this category.
Comes installed with some unnecessary software but not too bad. Wireless card is a standard G, no N support. Screen is also an older panel based on the 16:10 ratio rather than the new 16:9 panels. Older technology processor, no 4500HD uses the lesser 4500M version. Not sure if thats really a con as I almost prefer it this way anyways. 3GB of ram is also nice.Ĭons: No latch to keep the screen from folding out. Hard drive used in these is the Western Digital scorpio blue edition so its a fairly decent performer. Battery life was decent, I can get about 3.5 hours with 70% screen brightness and a balanced power plan setting. Pros: Notebook is built very rugged and spec'd fairly decent for its price.
